United Nations Environment Programmes’s (UNEP) efforts in developing regional partnerships, networks and capacity building in environmental data issues converged with AGEDI objectives. The Initiative was launched as a UNEP Type 2 Initiative with the main responsibility for the implementation at the local level with The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) while the regional and global levels lay with UNEP.

 Best Practice Reports

As part of regional level efforts, UNEP and AGEDI conducted a study and produced reports on relevant experience relating to best practices in the development of environmental data/information systems. Contributors include 11country partners from the West Asia region and 4 regional authorities. An integrated study of both the region and the world were also compiled.

Why Best Practice Reports?

Recent experiences with environmental issues have highlighted the need to improve data and information baseline upon which decision can be made. Rapid access to and integration of available environmental information resources is essential to support decision-making process for environmental management issues.

The reports present a cursory global, regional and country level overview on the experiences, best practices and status of environmental data and information systems in West Asia from a global perspective.

 West Asia GEO Data Portal

On the global front, our primary partner efforts in developing regional partnerships, networks and capacity building in environmental data management and availability converged with our own. Consequently, as a contribution of AGEDI, EAD signed an agreement with UNEP under which it will adapt, implement and host the West Asia GEO Data Portal.

Its online database holds more than 450 different variables, as national, subregional, and regional statistical or geospatial data sets (maps), covering themes like Freshwater, Population, Forests, Emissions, Climate, Disasters, Health and GDP. Display them on-the-fly as maps, graphs, tables, or download the data in different formats.
